China’s cumulative solar installations reached approximately 125.8 GW by the end of November, suggesting that PV developers completed nearly 50 GW of capacity in the first 11 months of 2017, according to new government statistics.
2017 was a busy year for India’s solar industry. As of the end of November, the country had installed around 5.5 GW of PV. With its ambitious renewable energy goals, it is paving the way to becoming a world leader in the industry. Overall, the country saw a rapid increase in renewable energy activity, with solar dominating almost 48% share of total capacity installed.
The Italian solar market has grown by 13% so far this year and by 6% in the third quarter. New additions for September reached 32.2 MW.
The Indian government has achieved only 17% of the set targets for the 2017-18 financial year, which is just 2% of the goal of 40 GW grid-connected solar rooftops by 2022. MNRE will soon propose new schemes to improve the sector.

The UK installed almost 2 GW of new PV installations in 2016, according to provisional BEIS statistics. The country’s cumulative capacity now surpasses 11.49 GW. The largest increase in capacity during the year was registered in March 2016, before the Renewable Obligation scheme for projects smaller than 5 MWp was closed, with a one-year grace period for some projects.
Turkey has installed 571 MW of new solar PV capacity in 2016, making it the best year for the country’s solar sector. 2017 is expected to be equally good, while a few worrying signs are on the horizon from 2018 onwards.
The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) has released a list of the winners for projects within the eagerly observed 500 MW rooftop auction, with prices falling to record lows, although full capacity details of the projects have not been included within the list.
Pace of Indian solar growth to accelerate this year as the nation is set to more than double 2016’s 4 GW capacity; however, headwinds regarding transmission and evacuation issues could slow expansion, Mercom says.
